* The seriously polluted Taihu Lake area has so far only 20 per cent of a
list of 1,035 industrial pollution sources operating in line with the
State's requirements. Construction has only begun on 14 of the planned 33
sewage plants.

* A snow disaster has killed some 20,000 head of livestock in the northern
section of the Tianshan Mountains in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,
the China News Service reported on Thursday. No human casualties have been
reported so far.

* Beijing plans to set up an 8,000-square-metre greenhouse for flora
display, the largest in China, in its botanical garden at the foot of
the Fragrant Hills in the western suburbs of Beijing.
