(1) Typhoon Winnie Kills More than 241 in Zhejiang

[CND, 08/21/97] Typhoon Winnie killed 230 in Taizhou, 10 in Wenzhou and
one in Hangzhou, AFP reported. A Zhejiang province foreign affairs
official said that the figures were still being collected. "We need
assistance, medicine most of all, and financial assistance," the official
added. The typhoon, said to be the most violent to hit China in 10 years,
destroyed 20,600 houses and affected 7 million people in the province.
Earlier typhoon Winnie crossed Taiwan, killing 32, with 12 more still
believed buried in the rubble of a collapsed apartment complex. (Jian-Min
