Perennial herbs. Culms tufted, trigonous or obtusely trigonous, rarely terete, few-many-nodose. Leaves basal and cauline, blades linear, grass-like, the base sheathing, ligulate. Bracts leaf-like, spreading. Inflorescence a terminal, corymbiform anthela, with many spikelets. Spikelets generally rathet small, ovoid or ellipsoid. Glumes spirally arranged, deciduous, each subtending a flower. Flowres bisexual; hypogynous bristles 36, as long as to much longer than the achene, deciduous with the achene. Stamens 13; style base not thickened, persistent, stigmas 23. Achenes obovate to elliptic, compressed trigonous to biconvex, beaked, smooth.
About 35 species; mostly in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with a rather high specific concentration in North America; 11 species in China.

Rhizome creeping, slender and short, 35 cm. Culms scattered, 1830 cm tall, slender, glabrous. Leaves shorter than the culm, 45 mm wide, flat, scabrous on margins and abaxial midrib, sheaths reddish-purple. Inflorescence a large paniculate, consisting of a terminal and 23 lateral anthela, with 34 rays, rays 1.54 cm, prophylla subtending a bisexual flower at base, on the opposite side of bracteolate. Spikelets solitary, lanceolate, 7--10 x 1.5--2.5 mm, 68-flowered. Glumes lanceolate, chartaceous, 5--7 mm (including awn), reddish-purple, the green 3-nerved costa excurrent in a scabrous awn at acuminate apex. Hypogynous bristles 6, very short, glabrous; Stamens 3, anthers linear; style slender, stigmas 3, nearly equaling the style. Achenes narrowly obovate, trigonous, ca. 1.5 mm, style-base black-purple, persistent. Fl. May. Fuiting unknown.
