Anthela terminal, simple or compound, with several to many first order or second order rays; rays long or short. Spikelets 2 to many in spikes, digitate or capitate at apex of rays, rarely single; rachilla not articulate, only articulate at base, or articulate at base of each scale, usually deciduous at articulation, winged or wingless; scales distichous, alternate, rarely spirally arranged, gradually deciduous from base to apex or persistent at rachilla and deciduous with rachilla; basalmost 2 scales usually without flower; remaining scales each with a bisexual flower. Flowers without hypogynous bristles or scalelike perianth parts. Stamens 1--3; connective usually prominent on apex of anther, sometimes laxly bristly. Style base not swollen; stigmas 1--3. Achene trigonous or biconvex, not stipitate or very shortly stipitate, surface smooth, various striate, or puncticulate.

Culms caespitose or solitary, erect, usually trigonous or acutely triquetrous, sometimes compressed triquetrous, stout or slender, leaved at basal part or at base. Leaves long or shortly sheathed. Bracts leaf-shaped, usually 2--10(--20 or more), at base of inflorescence. Anthela terminal, simple or compound, sometimes shorten into a head, with several to many rays and raylets; rays and raylets unequal or rarely equal in length. Spikelets few to many in spikes, digitate or capitate at apex of rays, rarely single; rachilla not articulate at base, persistent, usually with narrow wings; scales distichous, rarely spirally arranged; basalmost 1 or 2 scales without a flower; remaining scales each with a bisexual flower. Flowers without hypogynous bristles or scalelike perianth parts. Stamens (1--)3. Style base not swollen; stigmas (2 or)3, deciduous at maturity. Achene trigonous, surface smooth, puncticulate, tuberculate, or rarely reticulately striate.

Anthela compound or decompound; rays 6--10, usually to 18 cm, each with 4--7 raylets; raylets unequal in length. Spikes at apical part of raylets, cylindric, 3--6 X 0.4--2 cm, without a peduncle and with many laxly arranged spikelets. Cyperus esculentus var. esculentus occurs in the Mediterranean region and differs by having globose to ovoid tubers, anthela rays to 4 cm, and ellipsoid achenes. Cyperus esculentus var. sativus was introduced to China before the 1970s and is now grown as an oil-plant. The oil is used as an edible or industrial oil. The tubers could be used as a starch source. This herb grows and reproduces quickly and is good for soil conservation.

Anthela simple; rays 3--6, mostly to 2 cm, sometimes very abbreviated into a capitulum, each with 10--20 or more spikelets congested into subglobose spike. Spikelets oblong to linear-oblong, 3--15 X 1.5--2 mm, compressed, 8--30(--40)-flowered; rachilla strict, wingless; scales pale to yellowish white on both surfaces, densely imbricate, ovate, 1.2--1.5 mm, membranous, keel abaxially green, veins 3--5, apex truncate and mucronate. Bracts 3 to more than 10, leaf-shaped. Anthela simple or compound; rays long or abbreviated, each with several to many spikelets. Spikelets arranged into a spike or capitulum at apex of ray; rays sometimes with raylets. Spikelets at apex of raylet; rachilla articulate at near base, deciduous at article at maturity; scales distichous, persistent at rachilla and deciduous with rachilla, rarely deciduous from rachilla, basalmost 2 without a flowers, remaining ones each with a bisexual flower. Flowers without hypogynous bristles or scalelike perianth parts. Style long or short; stigmas (2 or)3. Achene trigonous, one side towards rachilla.

Perennials, with a short rhizome. Culms tufted, 8--32 cm tall, slightly slender, trigonous, smooth, base few-leaved. Leaves shorter than culm; sheath short; leaf blade 2.5--4 mm wide, flat, margin dentate. Bracts 3(or 4), level spreading, sometimes downwards reflexed. Spikes (1--)3, congregate, with numerous densely arranged spikelets; middle spike oblong cylindric to oblong, 6--14 X 4--6 mm; lateral spikes oblong, ca, 6 mm. Spikelets ovoid-ellipsoid to ovoid, ca. 2.2 mm, slightly turgid, 1- or 2-flowered; scales greenish yellow to yellowish white, broadly ovate, ca. 2 mm, concave-shaped, keel not spinulate, veins several, apex mucronate. Stamens 2; anthers short linear. Style medium length; stigmas 2. Achene at first yellow but dark brown when mature, ellipsoid to obovoid-ellipsoid, compressed biconvex, surface with punctate processes. Fl. and fr. May--Jul.

Rhizome long and thick, transversely repent, internodes short, clothed with brown scales, with 1 culm at each node. Culms scattered, 30--120 mm tall, very compressed trigonous or nearly compressed, smooth, base swollen into a bulb shape and clothed with long sheaths; sheaths cylindric, brown, obliquely truncate at orifice, apex mucronate, margin scarious, apicalmost 1 or 2 with a blade; leaf blade ca. 5 cm X 3--5 mm or shorter, flat denticulate on apical margin. Bracts 3, leaf-shaped, level spreading to downwards reflexed. Spike 1, ovoid, oblong-ovoid, or subglobose, 6--12 X 6--8 mm, with numerous densely arranged spikelets. Spikelets ellipsoid-lanceolate, ca. 3 mm, 1- or 2-flowered; scales; scales straw-colored with rust brown striae, ovate-lanceolate, ca. 3 mm, keel ± spinulate, veins 5--7, apex mucronate. Stamens 3; anthers short linear; connective prominent above anther. Style long; stigmas 2, shorter than style. Achene yellowish white at first but black when mature, oblong to obovoid-oblong, ca. 1/2 as long as scale, plano-convex, apex mucronate, surface with dense punctuate processes. Fl. and fr. May--Sep.

Leaves shorter to slightly longer than culm; sheaths brown, oblique-truncate at orifice, apex acuminate, basalmost 2 bladeless, apical 2 or 3 with a blade; leaf blade 5--15 cm X 2--4 mm, flaccid, flat, midvein and apical margin spinulate. Bracts 3, leaf-shaped, level spreading to usually downwards reflexed. Spike 1(--3), globose to ovoid-globose, 5--11 X 4--10 mm, with numerous densely arranged spikelets. Spikelets oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate, ca. 3 X 1 mm, compressed, 1- or 2-flowered; scales white with rust brown maculate or rarely straw-colored, ovate, 2.8--3 mm, keel spinulate, veins 2 or 3 on each side of keel, apex with a strict or recurved mucro or not mucronate. Stamens 1--3; anthers short linear. Style long; stigmas 2, less than 1/2 as long as style. Achene obovoid-oblong, 1--1.5 mm, biconvex, surface densely punctate. Fl. and fr. May--Oct.

Kyllinga brevifolia f. pumila (Suringar) T. Tang & F. T. Wang is similar to K. brevifolia var. stellulata (Suringar) T. Tang & F. T. Wang, because the type has not been seen, they are not conbined interim, Kyllinga brevifolia var. yunnanensis E. G. Camus have not seen also.

Bracts 3 or 4, leaf-shaped, much longer than inflorescence, level spreading to downwards reflexed, base usually broadening. Spike 1(--3), subglobose, 6--9 mm in diam., with many spikelets. Spikelets densely congested, broadly ovoid, 2.5--3 X 1.5--2 mm, compressed, 1-flowered; scales pale to straw-colored and sometimes rust brown maculate, boat-shaped, ca. 2.5--3 mm, keel green, winged, with 6--10 slightly broad teeth shaped like a cockscomb on apical ca. 2/3 of margin, and 1--3 spinelike trichomes at apex of teeth, apex with a strict mucro. Spikelets arranged into a short or long spike; rachilla with many articulations, breaking and deciduous at each articulation when mature; scales distichous, basalmost 2 without a flower, remaining ones each with a bisexual flower. Flowers without hypogynous bristles or scalelike perianth parts. Stamens 3; anthers usually short linear. Style medium, rarely short; stigmas 3. Achene trigonous.
About seven species: tropical Africa, America, Asia, and Oceanic Islands; one species (not endemic) in China.

Leaves shorter than culm; sheath purplish brown, long; leaf blade 4--10 mm wide, flat, slightly stiff. Bracts 6--8, obliquely spreading, usually longer than inflorescence. Anthela compound or decompound; rays 5--12, mostly to 20 cm, slightly stiff, each with several raylets; raylets 0--2 cm. Spikes oblong cylindric, 2--3 X ca. 1.5 cm, with many spikelets. Spikelets slightly laxly arranged, linearly cylindric, 0.8--2.5 cm X ca. 1 mm, level spreading to downwards reflexed, 10--25-flowered; rachilla with several to 10 or more articulations, wings broadly elliptic with a revolute margin, sometimes included rachilla; scales yellowish brown, straw-colored, or slightly reddish on both surfaces but middle abaxially green, slightly lax, ovate-elliptic, 2--3.5 mm, concave-shaped, nitid, rarely keeled, veins 7--9, apex obtuse.
