Perennial, rarely annual or biennial herbs or undershrubs with somewhat woody rhizome. Stems erect or rosulate, simple or branching, densely covered by white or ash-gray cottony tomentose hairs. Leaves simple, entire, sessile or petiolate or decurrent, alternate, rarely subopposite to opposite, oblong or lanceolate. Heads with many florets, 3–15 mm in diam., suborbiculate campanulate or subinfundibuliform, arranged in corymbiform or corymbiform paniculate branched inflorescences, rarely solitary or 2 or 3 per inflorescence. Plants dioecious or androgynous, having different types of florets: bisexual sterile florets with predominance of pistillate florets arranged in many external rows and a few to 1 central staminate florets, or many external rows of staminate florets and a few central pistillate florets. Involucre campanulate, turbinate, or semispherical, base tomentose; involucral bracts many seriate, imbricate, erect or expanding, scarious, lower parts brown, 1-veined, upper parts usually scarious, white or yellowish white or rarely pinkish. Receptacle subconvex or flat, alveolate, without squamules. Staminate florets: corolla tubular, 5-denticulate; stamens basally arrow-shaped with acerose tail; stigma 2 short lobes, apex truncate. Pistillate florets: corolla filiform, basally slightly dilated, 2–4-denticulate; style branches long, apex subrounded. Pappus in both florets consisting of one row of white free deciduous hairs, almost equal to corolla, scabrous, pinnate-incrassate at tip of apex in staminate florets, filiform and almost smooth or slightly scabrous at tip in pistillate florets. Achene oblong or subrounded, with glandular hairs or mammilla or almost glabrous, predominantly female capitula; cypselas of male florets vestigial and usually absent in predominantly male capitula.

[Is this discussion at all useful?? Suggest rewrite or delete:] According to Candolle, Anaphalis polylepis has “Leaves glabrous above, white cottony tomentose beneath …. close to A. polylepis, but fruticulose, heads smaller, with 20–50 florets, with or without few pistillate florets.” The last character seems to apply to staminate plants of this species. According to literature and type specimen photos by Candolle, this species, also close to A. margaritacea, has stem base ± woody, with branches; leaves dense, linear-oblong, 2–3 cm, gray or reddish brown lanuginous abaxially, nearly glabrous adaxially, 1-veined, weakly decurrent at base, obtuse or acute at apex; heads densely grouped in compound corymbs, somewhat similar to A. margaritacea but smaller; and involucral bracts obtuse or acuminate at apex.
