Rhizome creeping or short erect or scandent, dorsiventral, covered with ovate or lanceolate, brown scales. Leaves distant or tufted, dimorphic, simple or mostly pinnate. Sterile leaves: petioles dark brown or blackish near the base, bearing scales ±similar to those on the rhizome, usually on the basal part only; lamina herbaceous or papyraceous, apex usually with bulbils, margins entire, crenate or lobed, with or without teeth or spines, veins free or variously anastomosing and forming areolae, with or without included veinlets. Fertile leaves of similar shape as the sterile ones, usually with longer stipes and narrower lamina, sori acrostichoid, sporangia spreading all over the lower surface.
