(5) Funds for Scientific and Technology Research Jumps up 13.6%

[CND, 09/23/97] China government spent 33.2 billion yuan ($4 billion) in
funding scientific and technology research at institutes, universities and
enterprises in 1996, a 13.6% jump compared to in the previous year, AFP
reported, quoting Monday's China Daily. The government has put up an
average annual budget of 60 million yuan ($7.2 million) in its current
five-year (1996-2000) plan to train scientists in basic research areas,
which have been in a high priority in Beijing scientific and technology
