**** ARBORETUM AUTHORS HONORED
Carol David notes that the American Horticultural Society, in celebration
of its 75th Anniversary year, honored 75 great American garden books
published in the U.S. during its 75-year existence -- a full five of them
were authors associated with the Arnold Arboretum.

Alfred Rehder, Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs Hardy in North
America, (2nd edition) 1927.

Stephen A. Spongberg, A Reunion of Trees: The Discovery of Exotic Plants
and Their Introduction into North American and European Landscapes 1990.

Kim E. Tripp and J. C. Raulston, The Year in Trees: Superb Woody Plants
for Four-Season Gardens 1995.

Ernest H. Wilson, Aristocrats of the Garden 1932.

Donald Wyman, Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia 1986.

The works cited were chosen on the following criteria of excellence:

-Authority
-Seminal and historical works of our horticultural heritage
-Unity, clarity, and accuracy in reference books
-Original opinionated, passionate-even witty-writing styles
-Scientists and naturalists who enriched our awareness and understanding
of the natural world

Congratulations to the Arboretum honorees!
