An invitation from the INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION
FOR SUCCULENT PLANT STUDY (IOS)

The Executive Board of the IOS wishes active succulent plant
researchers, botanic gardens, scientific libraries and all those
interested in supporting the study of succulent plants to apply for
membership in this international organization.

The INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR SUCCULENT
PLANT STUDY (IOS) was established in 1950 to promote the study
of succulent and allied plants and to ENCOURAGE
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AMONGST THOSE
INTERESTED IN THEM. The IOS is a commission of the
International Union of Biological Sciences and seeks to achieve ist
goal through BIANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONGRESSES,
WORKING SESSIONS and its annual BULLETIN. It is also a strong
advocate of CONSERVATION and has an extensive Code of
Conduct. The Board believes the IOS can play a significant role in
providing researchers with the opportunity to share ideas and to
support one another in their research activities.

The IOS comprises five categories of members:
1. SECTION MEMBERS are currently engaged in the active scientific
study of succulent plants and belong to one or more of the following
sections in order to provide the opportunity to work together and to
exchange ideas and informations:
- Systematic Sections: Agavaceae, Aizoaceae, Aloaceae,
Asclepiadaceae, Cactaceae, Crassulaceae and other succulents,
Euphorbiaceae.
- Non-Systematic Sections: Conservation (the former sections Useful
succulents and Horticultural Techniques are temporarily suspended).
Those persons wishing to become Section Members are asked to
submit an application, a personal resume, and a list of publications.

This information will be forwarded to the Section Coordinators to
which the applicant wishes to belong. It is not a necessary
prerequisite
to hold a professionbal position as scientist, curator etc. in a
botanical
institute, garden, or municipal collection; however, it is hoped that
all
prospective section members should be willing to contribute regularly

to sectional meetings by presenting a paper or report or by sending
copies of published papers or reports on research in progress to the
Sectional Coordinator.
2. NON-SECTIONAL MEMBERS are individuals who are not
actively engaged in research on succulent plants but who wish to
support the work of others and to keep abreast of activities within
the
organization. These are eligible to attend IOS meetings and to
receive
all publications of the IOS. Membership in this category is obtained
by
applying to the Assistant Secretary for approval of the Board.
3. INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIP may include any recognized
institution or organization interested in the objectives of the IOS.
The
annual subscription rate is the same as for single individual
members.
4. STUDENT MEMBERSHIP is at the discretion of the Executive
Board at a reduced annual fee. Applications have to be approved and
counter-signed or a letter of support written by the student's
supervisor or advisor. Student members have the same privileges as
other members, with the exception of voting rights.
5. HONORARY MEMBERS

The IOS is truly international and counts at present almost 250
individual members from numerous countries on all continents as well
as institutional members (botanical gardens, scientific libraries
etc.).
This makes possible the attainment of one of the primary goals of the

IOS: to provide an INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR THE
PRESENTATION OF PAPERS AND SHARING IDEAS.
The NEXT IOS-CONGRESS will take place from August 31st to
September 4th 1998 in Kirstenbosch Gardens, Republic of South
Africa. For further informations, please contact:
Scientific Programme: Craig Hilton-Taylor; e-mail:

Congress and Tours: IOS Congress and Tours Coordinators, e-mail:

Annual membership dues are currently 60 Swiss Francs, and benefits
from membership include the possibility to attend international
congresses and intercongresses, and the annual publications IOS
Bulletin (the member's forum which informs on past and forthcoming
activities; it also contains the current membership list) and
Repertorium Plantarum Succulentarum (an annual listing of new taxa
and new combinations of succulent plants published in a given year
and a bibliography of literature relating to succulent plants).

The IOS is strongly committed to THE CONSERVATION of natural
populations of plants, especially succulents, and has written a Code
of
Conduct for its members, whose undersigning is obligatory for all
applicants.

The Executive Board invites you to seriously consider membership in
the IOS; either as Section Member or Institutional Member.
