(2) Flooding Kills Nine People in Sichuan

[CND, 05/19/98] Sixteen hours of heavy downpours have caused nine
deaths, at least 47 injured and vast areas of farmland submerged in
Sichuan Province, AFP reported Monday. The heaviest-hit region is Dachuan
Prefecture where six have been killed by landslides. Linshui, Dazhu,
Kaijiang and Qu counties have also been badly flooded. At least 40,000
homes and more than 2 million people have been affected.

Last week, days of torrential rains also pounded on Fujian Province,
which, along with Jiangxi, Hunan and Zhejiang provinces, has been hit by
four times of normal amount of seasonal rains so far this year. The
total number of deaths caused by floods across the country has reached at
least 20 since the flood season began this year. (Xiayi KE, YIN De An).
