(2) Flooding Claims 105 Lives in Guangdong Province

[CND, 05/13/97] In the worst flooding hitting northern Guangdong Province
in 500 years, at least 105 people were killed, many listed as missing and
more than 360,000 forced from their homes by fierce storms, AFP quoted
several Chinese resources as reporting. Landslides demolished entire villages
and 33,000 acres of farmland were flooded. A major cleanup operation had
begun and local authorities has started distributing emergency food and
clothing as flood waters began receding. The storms might have caused the
crash landing of a Boeing-737 at Shenzhen airport. (Yinrong HUANG and
