(5) Leaded Gas to Be Banned in Beijing

[CND, 05/07/97] Exhaust from 1.2 million motor vehicles in Beijing is
accountable for 75 percent of the total lead in the city's air. The city
authorities has just issued the ban on sale of leaded fuel in order to
alleviate the dreadful pollution of the capital. The ban becomes effective
on June 1. However the transition could be a difficult one because most
drivers like using the cheap leaded oil and many gas stations do not offer
the unleaded option by now. Beijing's largest gas plant only started
producing unleaded fuel in March this year, having spent $132 million or
so to install new equipment. (Greg GAO, Yin De An)
