(St. Louis, MO): The Missouri Botanical Garden, in cooperation with the St.
Louis Chinese Community, will celebrate the cultural heritage of China on
Saturday, June 6 from 10:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. Chinese Culture Day Celebration will offer a variety of
activities for all ages, including traditional lion dances and folk dances,
musical performances, martial arts and cooking
demonstrations, children's games, and a Chinese dynasty costume show.
Chinese craft masters will share their skills while visitors enjoy
demonstrations and exhibitions of the traditional
arts of Chinese bonsai, painting, calligraphy, and paper cutting. Craft
sales, tours of the fabulous Chinese garden, and authentic Chinese food
will round out the day's festivities.
This year's Chinese Culture Day Celebration at the Garden will highlight
its unique relationship with China. The Opening Ceremony will take place at
10:00 a.m. under the towering Dawn
Redwood trees, celebrating the trees' 50th birthday this year. This
prehistoric tree species was once thought to be extinct until they were
rediscovered in a remote region of China in the
1940s and subsequently transplanted at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
The Garden is the United States coordinating center for the massive Flora
of China research project. A related exhibition will feature rare Chinese
herbarium specimens that have come to
the Garden as a part of this international initiative.
The Garden Gate Shop will feature several special items of particular
interest including two books, Flora of China, Volume 17 and Chinese Herbs
by John D. Keys. The shop will also
offer Chinese papercut blank notecards. All proceeds from sales benefit the
Missouri Botanical Garden.
The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Boulevard in St.
Louis, just off I-44 and Kingshighway. All Chinese Culture Day Celebration
festivities are free with regular Garden
admission or Garden membership. St. Louis City and County residents enjoy
free admission every Saturday morning before noon. Free parking is
available on the premises. For more
