(2) Summer Drought Damages to Crops Predicted North of Yangtze

[CND, 06/25/97] Northern China is facing a tough drought this summer that
will cause damages to millions of hectares of crops, Xinhua News Agency
reported. The National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters
released a notice, requesting affected regions to be prepared. There has
been unusually hot weather and very little rain since June in areas North
of Yangtze River. About 17.3 million hectares of crops have been
affected. Historically, those regions do not have a lot of summer
rainfall. The National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters
asked farmers to get ready for the damages and to work on compensating the
loss in the next season. (Dong LIU, Guochen WAN)
