(1) Flood in Hunan Claims 30 Lives

[CND, 06/10/97] A heavy thunderstorm hit the areas of Changsha and Liuyang
in Hunan last week, leaving 30 people dead and 8 missing, AFP reported on
Sunday, quoting an official at the Hunan Flood Control Headquarters.

The 10-hour storm started in the evening of last Friday and has dumped
21.9 and 29.7 centimeters of rain in Changsha and Liuyang, respectively.
The flood has damaged more than 66,000 buildings and forced 113,000 people
to be evacuated. It is estimated that the total damage could be up to
1.33 billion yuans, or 160 million dollars, and as many as 220,000 were
affected.

Last year, according to Chinese government's estimates, floods killed more
than 3,000 people nationwide and caused $26.5 billion economic losses.
