(7) China Hit by Drought in North, Flood in South

[CND, 07/17/97] China is plagued by drought and high temperatures in the
northern parts and flood in the south, reported Xinhua. In early July,
temperatures in much of northern China had risen by several degrees, with
rainfall dropping by 50-90 percent. Meanwhile, rainfalls in areas south
of the Yangtze river were two to five times as much in the first ten days
in July as in the same period last year. The drought and flood were
threatening rice and other crops. (Linda WU, Ray ZHANG)
