The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has great pleasure in announcing the publication of the Chinese Edition of The Herbarium Handbook on 30 December 1998. This volume was produced within the spirit of Kew’s memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (flowering plants) and with the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (fungi). The translation and editing was freely provided by colleagues from China, while the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew facilitated production and shipment to China. This book marks the first contribution to the joint Kew-Beijing Herbarium Training Course to be held in Beijing in 2000.

The Chinese Edition of The Herbarium Handbook, is based on the Third Edition (Bridson & Forman 1998). The ‘Additions, up-dates and corrections’ have been assimilated and the additional chapter ‘42. International legislation and the herbarium’ incorporated. The Chinese Edition offers a modern western perspective to complement herbarium management and practice in China. Differences between Chinese and western practice have been noted.

The larger part of the stock of this Handbook (800 copies) has been sent to Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing for distribution within China. However, some copies have been retained at Kew to satisfy requests from elsewhere. This is the second language translation of The Herbarium Handbook, the first being the Russian Edition (Geltman 1995).
